Editor's RatingReviewed on October 30, 2017Can a single game ruin a genre for everything else that comes out? Most games are subject to a parade of wannabes and one-uppers, but some games just can't be copied. These games say everything that needs to be said and do the job so well that no one else really needs to step in. Sometimes, though, you'll get a developer who tries to fill that space anyway.
When that happens, you have to hope that the developer really has something unique to add. When you don't get that, you get Codename CURE.Squad-based Zombie Survival GameCodename CURE bills itself as a squad-based zombie survival game.

In essence, it's a thinking man's Left 4 Dead, assuming Left 4 Dead was on a free play model. It's not an exact clone, but it's easy to see the parallels. At its heart, it's about seeing if you can complete an objective while a horde of zombies is trying to kill you. While you're armed, your best line of defense is the other players.
Cooperation is a necessity in this game, as one player who can't pull his or her weight will doom the whole team. It's not unique, but it is part of a genre that is largely untapped.Codename CURE succeeds when it tries something different. The game is a bit more tactical than the other squad zombie survival games, allowing players to think more than twitch. It's a welcome reprieve from a genre that's more about fast reflexes than thought, even though twitch players can still survive.
The fact that weapons can be modified also allows for a bit more strategy, something that players of games like Counterstrike ought to appreciate. It's not perfect, but it is free - and that's probably the biggest selling point for this game. Needs More Polish to Compete with Similar GamesThe big problem with the game is that it just doesn't stand up to the other games in the genre. Codename CURE would be fine in a world that didn't have Left 4 Dead, but that's not where it exists. Simply put, Left 4 Dead does everything that Codename CURE does with a higher level of polish. It's overall a better game, even if it isn't free. If the cost is the only thing a game has going for it, it's hard to call it a good game.
It's a shame that the game didn't try harder to innovate. Try If You Need Your Zombie FixCodename CURE runs into a problem that's all too common on Steam. If you have any money at all, you can find a better game.
In fact, you can probably even find a better free game if you want to put in the time to find one. This game is fine, but it doesn't do anything well enough to pull you away from the real winners in the genre.
If you need a zombie fix and can't figure out anywhere better to go, try this game. You won't be let down by the action, but you'll always know that you could have made a better choice.

What's the allure of a game like this versus a more polished and unique title like Killing Floor? The textures look bland, which in turns makes the environments appear very one dimensional and dull - the grey overtones done help one bit. The AI doesn't appear to be very challenging. The gun play looks pretty substandard as well, so what's the point? It just doesn't appear as though a lot of work went into this game, obviously there was work put in because even developing a pong clone is tougher than one would expect, but for something that you're asking people to trust will improve, this looks pretty sub-par.
